Come Discover the King of Instruments!


The Holland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is pleased to invite you to attend a summer Pipe Organ Encounter on the shores of Michigan’s beautiful vacation land.


This exciting week long event is designed especially for young organists ages 13-18. You will be a guest of Hope College, a private liberal arts college with a strong legacy in organ performance. You will receive your meals on campus and stay in a college dormitory (Sunday evening through Friday noon). Adult assistance and supervision will be provided at all times.


You will be transported to area churches and auditoriums to see, hear, and play some outstanding examples of why the pipe organ is “The King of Instruments!”

Pipe Organ Encounters is an educational outreach program of the American Guild of Organists. Major funding for Pipe Organ Encounters is provided by the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America. Additional support is provided by the American Institute of Organbuilders. Permanently endowed AGO scholarships are provided in memory of Charlene Brice Alexander, Robert S. Baker, Seth Bingham, Clarence Dickinson, Philip Hahn, Charles N. Henderson, Alfred E. Lunsford, Ruth Milliken, Ned Siebert, and Martin M. Wick; and in honor of Anthony Baglivi, Philip E. Baker, Morgan and Mary Simmons, and the Leupold Foundation.


Enrollment


This event is open to persons ages 13-18 who wish to discover or develop their talents in playing the organ, and who have completed some studies either on organ or piano. (Individuals with other kinds of musical training should speak with the POE Director before applying.) Daily instruction will be provided either on a Beginner or Intermediate-to-Advanced track, based upon individual proficiencies. All proficiency levels are welcome and encouraged to attend!


Faculty


A faculty, including nationally-recognized organists, will provide recitals, daily instruction, group workshops, and master classes. Click on the names for more information about the faculty.  These include: Paul Barte, Larry Biser, Julia Collingsworth, Gregory Crowell, Susan DeKam, Richard Newman, Steven Egler, Donna Gatz, James Kibbie, Ann Labounsky, Huw Lewis, Marilyn Ossentjuk, Karl Schrock, Aaron Tan, and Linda Strouf. Daily instruction will be given on an impressive variety of organs both on and close to the campus of Hope College.


Registration Information


Your registration fee covers lodging, meals, instruction, materials, all local transportation, and a one-year Student Membership to the American Guild of Organists. Enrollment is limited to 28 students, so register early to ensure yourself a place at the POE.


Registration on or before March 15 is $400; after March 15 is $425. Cancellations will be refunded (less a $25 processing fee) until enrollment is locked on May 15. No applications or cancellations will be accepted after that.


Some scholarship assistance is available. Contact your local AGO chapter, local religious bodies and schools, or the POE Director to request assistance.


About Holland


Holland is located on the shore of Lake Michigan southwest of Grand Rapids. It is accessible by car via I-196 or US-31. Air transportation is best through Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, about 40 minutes away. Amtrak and Greyhound also provide daily service.
